Every page about Christmas tree decorations shows you finished trees and none of them tell you how much stuff is on there. That's the actual question people have while standing in a shop holding a box of twelve baubles, wondering whether twelve is a lot or nothing.
So, numbers first. A seven foot tree with a four foot base has roughly 46 square feet of visible cone surface, which at a comfortable spacing works out somewhere between 75 and 100 ornaments, plus 700 to 1,000 lights depending on how dense you like it. That's my own arithmetic rather than a manufacturer's, and I'll show the working below so you can disagree with the spacing rather than with the geometry.
The other thing worth knowing is the fire data, because there's a real federal research report on tree fires that nobody links to from a decorating page, and the causes it identifies are almost entirely about lights and placement rather than about the tree itself.
The Search Result Is All Mood And No Measurement
Eight results. Two of them sell ornaments, one sells decorative trees, one sells luxury trees, one is Pinterest with over 900 decorating ideas, two are YouTube videos, and one is a magazine list of 70 decoration ideas.
Every one of them is a picture problem rather than a quantity problem.
Which is understandable, since photographs of finished trees are what most people want when they're looking for a look. It leaves a gap though, because the person who has chosen their look still has to buy a specific number of things, and the difference between 40 ornaments and 90 on the same tree is the difference between sparse and full, and nobody will tell you which one you're buying.
Working Out How Many Ornaments A Tree Takes
I modelled the tree as a cone, which it approximately is, and used the lateral surface area rather than the height, because ornaments cover surface rather than distance.
For each tree I took the height and a typical base diameter, computed the slant height, and got the lateral area from pi times the base radius times the slant. Then I divided by a spacing allowance per ornament. At 0.6 square feet per ornament you get a traditional, slightly restrained look. At 0.45 you get dense.

Two caveats before anyone buys 181 baubles. Base widths vary a lot by tree shape, and a slim tree of the same height has dramatically less surface, sometimes half. And you don't decorate the back if the tree sits against a wall, which knocks maybe a quarter to a third off every number in that table.
The bit I find genuinely useful is the jump from six feet to nine. It's only three feet of height and it's more than double the surface area, which is why people who upgrade tree size are always surprised that their existing decorations suddenly look thin.
Lights, Where The Common Rule Falls Apart
The rule everyone repeats is 100 lights per foot of tree height. For a seven foot tree that's 700, and for a nine foot tree it's 900.
Run that against the surface numbers and something's off. The nine foot tree has 78 percent more surface than the seven foot one but the rule only gives it 29 percent more lights. Height-based rules systematically under-light big trees and over-light slim ones, which matches what most people find in practice without knowing why.
If you want density to stay constant, scale lights by area rather than height. Take whatever looked right on your last tree, divide by that tree's surface area from the table, and multiply by the new one.
For what it's worth I'd rather have too many lights than too few, and I'd buy them in more, shorter strings rather than fewer long ones, because a failed segment in one long string takes the whole side of the tree out.
What The Fire Research Actually Says
This is the part I went looking for and it's better documented than I expected.
The National Fire Protection Association's Christmas tree fires report, published December 2022 and covering 2016 to 2020, found that US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 160 home structure fires per year that began with the ignition of a Christmas tree. Those caused an annual average of two civilian deaths, 11 civilian injuries, and $12 million in direct property damage.
Divide that out and each tree fire cost about $75,000 in direct damage on average, with one death for roughly every 80 fires. Those are my numbers from their totals, not theirs.

And the contributing factors line up with it. Electrical failure or malfunction was behind 34 percent of these fires and a heat source too close to combustibles behind another 20 percent, so those two together account for more than half. Unclassified misuse of a material or product came in at 9 percent, with abandoned or discarded material and playing with a heat source at 6 percent each.
The report is careful to note the scale. Tree fires are less than 0.1 percent of reported home fires, 0.1 percent of home fire deaths and injuries, and 0.2 percent of direct property damage. It also points out that this is a small number for something present in a limited number of homes for a few weeks a year, which is the honest way to frame it.
When And Where They Happen
Three quarters of these fires occurred in December or January, which is not surprising, though the January share is the interesting one. The report notes that the longer a natural tree stays up after Christmas the more likely it is to dry out and ignite, and that some January fires happened after the tree had already been taken down.
Around two in five started in the living room, family room or den. Those rooms accounted for 73 percent of the injuries and 55 percent of the direct property damage, which tells you the fires that start where people sit are the ones that hurt people.
Half of tree fires happened between 3pm and midnight, with another 26 percent between 9am and 3pm.
The trend is downward over the long run. The same report puts the range across 2002 to 2020 at a high of 280 fires in 2007 and a low of 130 in both 2016 and 2017, with 180 in 2020.
Practical version of all that. The lights and their cords are the risk, not the decorations. Keep heaters away from the tree, replace strings with damaged wiring rather than nursing them along, don't run everything off one overloaded socket, and take a real tree down sooner than feels necessary.
Ornaments As Gifts, Which Is Half Of Why People Search This
A decoration is a strange gift and a surprisingly good one.
It's cheap enough to give without obligation, it gets stored for eleven months so it doesn't clutter, and it comes back out annually with your name attached to it in the recipient's memory. There aren't many gifts under twenty dollars that get looked at every year for a decade.
The version that works best is a decoration that marks something. A first Christmas in a new house, a first Christmas as a couple, a year someone did a thing. It gives the object a reason to survive the annual cull, and every household has an annual cull. What doesn't work is a decoration that fights the recipient's scheme. People have colour and style commitments about trees that they'd never articulate out loud and will absolutely enforce, and a decoration in the wrong palette gets hung on the back of the tree forever. The structural stuff, lights and a base layer of plain baubles, can and should be bought as a batch. It's the filler that makes everything else read as intentional, and nobody looks closely at it.
